Are We Dumb or Just Ignorant? Living in the Age of Kali-Yuga

(Originally, I wrote this for my website blog in 2022, but it was lost when my then website disappeared off the internet).

You know the saying: everything old becomes new again. And it’s true — but somehow we humans always act surprised.

Once upon a time, long before supermarkets, pharmaceuticals, and Google searches, people lived close to nature. They relied on plants, rituals, and inner stillness to stay healthy and balanced. These ways of living grew out of ancient cultures — especially in India — where entire systems of knowledge were developed to help humans thrive physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Fast-forward to the modern Western world, and we somehow convinced ourselves that all of that was “primitive.” We thought we were more advanced, more rational, more sophisticated.

And how’s that working out for us?

  • Record levels of stress and burnout
  • Skyrocketing chronic illness
  • Dependence on pharmaceuticals as a first response
  • Anxiety and depression at all-time highs
  • A population that is tired, wired, and spiritually malnourished

Meanwhile, many of these issues are far less common in cultures that still live with nature instead of against it.

Imagine This…

Eating fresh, unprocessed food — straight from the earth.
But Westerners often don’t like that idea. Too slow. Too hard. Not enough salt or sugar.

Having downtime — actual stillness. Doing nothing without feeling guilty.
But here, we glorify busyness like it’s an Olympic sport.

Paying attention to your body — noticing its signals early and supporting yourself before things fall apart.
But that’s “too much effort,” so we outsource our wellbeing to a GP who has ten minutes to fix a decade’s worth of bad habits.

I’m not saying we’re dumb… But I am saying we’re not the brightest when it comes to living wisely.

And yet — here we are — circling back to the very practices our ancestors used without needing a scientific paper to convince them.

Because when life becomes chaotic enough and people become chronically ill, they finally stop and think. They realise they need to change.

Vedic Meditation: Ancient Calm Modern Clarity

Vedic Meditation made its way to the West in the 70s when the Beatles travelled to India and lived in an ashram with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. But its roots go back thousands of years in the Vedic tradition — the same body of knowledge that gave us Yoga and Ayurveda.

This is not concentration or a guided type meditation. It’s a transcending technique — the mind effortlessly settles into quieter states, and the body drops into deep rest. Stress dissolves at the source. Creativity rises. Clarity returns. Sleep improves. Life becomes less of a struggle.

Ancient? Yes. Relevant today? More than ever.

The Power of Plants — Then and Now

Before synthetic drugs existed, plants were the original medicine cabinet. Ayurveda — one of the oldest healing systems on earth — used plants in incredibly sophisticated ways:

Herbal-infused oils (Tailas)
Sesame or coconut oil cooked with herbs for healing, balancing, and nourishing the nervous system.

Resins (such as frankincense and myrrh)
Burned for purification, calming the mind, and supporting respiratory health.

Pastes & Powders (like Turmeric paste)
Applied to the skin, mixed with ghee or honey, or taken internally.

Decoctions (Kashayam)
Herbs boiled slowly to extract their therapeutic compounds.

Aromatic smoke rituals (Dhoopana)
Herbs, woods, and resins burned to clear energy, cleanse spaces, and support emotional balance.

This is the real Ayurvedic tradition — plant medicine in its natural, potent, multi-layered forms.

Modern essential oils did not exist in ancient India, because steam distillation came later. But…

Modern essential oils are simply a concentrated evolution of those ancient practices.

Same plants. Same therapeutic intentions. New extraction method.

And yes — they can influence mood, the nervous system, the breath, and the emotional body… just as aromatic plants always have.

Ancient wisdom updated for modern convenience.

So What Does This Have to Do With Kali-Yuga?

Everything. In the Vedic texts, time moves in cycles called Yugas:

Satya Yuga — the age of truth, harmony, and natural spiritual awareness

Treta Yuga — the age of ritual, devotion, and sacred order

Dvapara Yuga — the age of knowledge, power, and increasing duality

Kali Yuga — the age of confusion, discord, and spiritual forgetfulness

We are currently in Kali-Yuga, described as a time when:

  • People become disconnected from nature
  • Wisdom is dismissed or forgotten
  • Materialism overrides meaning
  • Attention becomes scattered and weak
  • Ignorance masquerades as intelligence
  • Health declines because lifestyles decline

It’s not all doom and gloom because we need cycles to illicit change. Kali-Yuga is the age in which spiritual practices become more accessible and more potent because people need them more. When consciousness contracts, people eventually seek something deeper. This is why meditation, Ayurveda, herbal medicine, yoga, breathwork, grounding, simplicity, and nature-based living are resurging. Not because they’re “trendy,” but because the cycle is changing and the human nervous system is waving a white flag.

Where Do We Go From Here?

We can continue living in the fast lane, ignoring our wellbeing, prioritising our to-do lists, while numbing our discomfort, and wondering why we feel exhausted. Or we can return to what we have always known:

  • Plants heal.
  • Stillness heals.
  • Nature heals.
  • Awareness heals.
  • Consciousness heals.

The wisdom never disappeared. We just stopped listening. But we can listen again.
